August 23rd 1939 - The non-aggression act between the Soviet-Union and Germany

August 23rd 1939 - Nazi Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop arrives in Moscow to sign the German-Soviet non-aggression pact. It is a pact with fatal consequences. In a secret protocol, the agreement covers the spheres of interests of Russia and the Third Reich in Eastern Europe. Thus Finland and the Baltic States as well as Eastern Poland and Bessarabia, fell within the Soviet area of interest, and in Western Poland, Hitler had free reign. With the so-called "Hitler-Stalin pact" the Third Reich achieved a major foreign policy success. In vain the Western powers had hoped for an alliance with Stalin, who instead supplied raw materials to Germany, and supported Hitlers armaments. The pact was not to be permanent - two years later Nazi Germany was at war with the Soviet Union.
