August 1st 1914 - Beginning of World War I


August 1st 1914 - the German Empire declares war on Russia - it is the beginning of a chain reaction that will trigger the First World War, the first industrialized mass warfare of the 20th Century. The opponents in essence were Germany and Austria-Hungary on the one hand, France, Russia and Britain on the other. The theaters of war were Europe, the Middle East, Africa and East Asia. It was fought with the latest in weapons technology, which included automatic weapons, poison gas and armored vehicles. Correspondingly the number of victims was high, amounting in a total of about 10 million dead and 20 million wounded and maimed. The end of the war in 1918 also meant the end of the old dynasties in Germany, Austria and Russia, paving the way for new forms of society.
