Jahrestag

September 1st 1939 - the beginning of World War II with Germanys attack on Poland

September 1st 1939 - With the bombardment of the Westerplatte peninsula by the German battleship “Schleswig-Holstein" Hitler begins his campaign against Poland and the Second World War. As pretext serves him the dispute around the free City of Danzig, which, contrary to the agreements of the Treaty of Versailles, he wanted to annex to Germany. The Polish government refuses to agree to the demand. Hitler initiates hostilities on the morning of September 1st. The Nazis celebrate the invasion of Poland as the first successful "blitzkrieg". For Poland, it meant the loss of its sovereignty, the enslavement of its people and the ghettos and extermination of the Jews living in Poland.
