September 2nd 1945 - Japans surrender

September 2nd 1945: Almost a month after atomic bombs had been dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese leadership surrenders in the Bay of Tokyo and ends the Second World War in the Pacific. The signing of the capitulation takes place on the American battleship Missouri, and is received by U.S. General Douglas MacArthur. The Japanese side is represented by Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Chief of Staff Umezu Yoshijiro. After a speech by MacArthur they take seat at a specifically designed table and sign their countrys defeat. On both sides the Pacific War was fought with great sacrifice. Japan lost more than a million soldiers. The number of victims among the civilian population can only be estimated due to the late effects of the atomic bombs. '
