January 11th 1923 - Occupation of the Ruhr


January 11th 1923: For the alleged tardiness of the German Empire in complying with the provisions of the treaty of Versailles, French and Belgian troops occupy the Ruhr. It is an act of vigilantly justice. Its not just about steel and coal it is about a new border demarcation which is to push Germany back towards the Rhine. The administration in Berlin has no way to stop the invasion. It calls for passive resistance. The consequences are more sanctions and a ruthless fight against all civil resistance a measure that results in many casualties. The so-called "Ruhr struggle" is ended only through the Treaties of Locarno and the withdrawal of the occupying forces at the end of 1925. However resentments remain amongst the
