January 27th 1945 - Liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp

January 27th 1945: The liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp by the Red Army, now an official day of remembrance for the victims of National Socialism in Germany. Auschwitz was the largest death camp of the so-called Third Reich, built in 1941 on the territory of occupied Poland. Here, over a million people were gassed and shot or lost their lives as a result of medical experiments, disease, abuse and malnutrition. Auschwitz is a symbol of Nazi barbarism and stands for the genocide of the European Jews. The remaining camp complex with the gas chambers and crematoria is today a memorial and was put under world heritage protection by the UNESCO.
