February 28th 1925 - Friedrich Ebert dies

February 28th 1925: The first president of the Weimar Republic, Friedrich Ebert dies. Born in 1871 in Heidelberg, the SPD politician is a key figure of the parliamentary democracy in Germany. In January of 1919 he prevails against the radical forces of Independent Social Democrats and Communists and is appointed by the National Assembly one month later as the head of state. Eberts role is not without controversy. His cooperation with the old imperial elites to stabilize the state of affairs in Germany particularly its alliance with the military brings with it the accusation of having accepted the murder of Communist Party leader Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxembourg. It is clear that the Republic depends on the support of the army and volunteer corps. At their memorial in Berlin shown here indeed military honors are bestowed upon the deceased but the actual attitude of the generals revealed itself in the election of Paul von Hindenburg as the new President. Hindenburg was considered a representative of Prussian monarchical tradition and appointed Hitler as chancellor in January of 1933.
