May 1st 1929 - "Blood May"

 

May 1st 1929. In Berlin, the Social Democratic Chief of police Karl Zörgiebel imposes a ban on demonstrations for fear of unrest. The KPD still took to the streets, and bloody clashes with the police erupted. According to official figures, nine people were killed, many, including several policemen, were seriously injured. May 1st 1929 went down in history as "Blood May". It intensified the contrast between the Social Democrats and Communists, and divided their supporters in the labor movement. For some a holiday, Labor Day, for the supporters of the Communist Party, was a day of action, which gained a special significance due to the events of 1929.
