3. April 1930 - Helmut Kohl is born

Helmut Kohl, born on 3 April 1930 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, witnesses the highlight of his political career in the autumn of 1990: the reunification of the divided Germany. To shape the very same remains the lifetime achievement of his political career. Kohls rise in federal politics begins in 1973. He becomes the Chairman of the CDU party Germany's Christian Democratic Union and follows in the footsteps of Konrad Adenauer - his role model. About him he says in 1970: Original Audio ? (subtitles?) In1982 Kohl follows Helmut Schmidt as chancellor. He continues by the policy of détente long opposed by the CDU. In 1987 he even invites East German leader Erich Honecker to Bonn. At the same time he advocates (along with the U.S.) for a policy of strength: The confrontation with the peace movement which is protesting against the deployment of U.S. medium-range missiles in West Germany becomes Kohl's first test in office and the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany his last. The achievements of Kohl's political career are overshadowed by his behavior during the donations scandal of the CDU. In 1999 the former chancellor and CDU chairman admitted to having accepted 2.1 million Deutschmark in illegal party donations. Kohl never revealed the identity of the donors. On April 3rd 2010 Helmut Kohl turned 80 years old.
