July 2nd 1900 - Launch of the first zeppelin


July 2nd 1900: Maiden flight of the first Zeppelin airship in Germany, and the beginning of a process that at a great expense and numerous accidents, finally brought the airship to the production stage. The Zeppelins, named after its inventor, Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin, were used both in civil aviation and for military purposes. They carried passengers, posted distance records and were used on expeditions. During the First World War, the Supreme Command used them for observations of the enemy and to drop explosives. But their vulnerability was especially revealed in the war effort. Being filled with highly flammable hydrogen turned the cumbersome apparatus themselves into ticking time bombs. With the beginning of World War II they were replaced by the modern airplane for good'
