June 2nd 1972 - Arrest of the leadership of the RAF in Frankfurt am Main

June 2nd 1972: In Frankfurt on the Main the leadership Red Army Faction was arrested in a spectacular police operation. Officials of the Federal Criminal Police and the state police of Hesse surrounded the building where the terrorists had barricaded themselves and eventually got them to surrender. Except for Holger Meins, Andreas Baader and Jan-Carl Raspe were arrested. But with the arrest the terror most certainly did not come to an end. Numerous attacks were to follow, including those on the Chief Federal Prosecutor Siegfried Buback in 1977, the Chief NATO commander in Europe, Alexander Haig, in 1979, and the assassination of the head of Deutsche Bank, Alfred Herrhausen in 1989. The activities of the so-called Baader-Meinhof Group and its successor, keep German Federal authorities occupied to this day.
