January 14th 1944 - The Start of the Battle of Monte Cassino

 

On January17th 1944 the battle for Monte Cassino begins, one of the longest battles of the Second World War. Four months battles with heavy losses rage between Allied forces and the 1st German Parachute Division. It has turned city and mountain into a fortress. Monte Cassino is an important strategic point for the line of defense extending across Italy, called the “Gustav Line”. At Monte Cassino, the German troops try to stop the allies of closing in on Rome. Only massive bombing, during which the monastery with its 1500-year history is completely destroyed, the resistance of the German troops breaks . On May 12th the decisive campaign of the Allies begins. On May 17th the German commander in Italy, Field Marshall Albert Kesselring, gives the command to retreat. The fighting at Monte Cassino are labeled as a "multi-ethnic battle". 105 000 soldiers fight on the side of the Allies, amongst them Poles Frenchmen, Algerians and Moroccans side by side with the British and Americans. 12 000 lose their lives. 80,000 soldiers fight on the German side. 20,000 of them die.
