February 16th 1964 - Willy Brandt becomes SPD Chairman

 

At an extraordinary party congress on the 15th and 16th of February of 1964, the former mayor of Berlin Willy Brandt, is elected by the delegates in Bonn-Bad Godesberg, as the successor of the late SPD chairman Erich Ollenhauer. For Brandt, who remains chairman of the SPD until 1987, the political rise on the national level now begins. It finally leads him to the office of Chancellor in 1969. In Willy Brandt the SPD provides the head of government once again for the first time since the end of World War II. His social-liberal coalition with the FDP modernized the country, which wants dare more democracy. Brandts new politics towards the east the so-called “Ostpolitik” will become legendary. Even as party leader Brandt breaks new ground. He makes the SPD accessible to the public combines culture entertainment and politics and turns the traditional Labor Party into the People's Party. And with that Willy Brandt himself becomes a charismatic leading figure of the 70's a symbol of a better Germany an internationally renown statesman whose political dream the reunification of Germany come true during his lifetime.
