April 11th 1945 - Liberation of the concentration camp Buchenwald

April 11th 1945: The liberation of the concentration camp Buchenwald near the city of Weimar by the advancing U.S. Army. It was only a partially successful undertaking. Before the camp was liberated the SS still managed to evacuate a large part of the prisoners to other camps. A measure labeled as the "death marches" during which over 10,000 prisoners lost their lives. When the troops finally managed to overcome the remaining guards, with the help of a camp internal resistance group, they faced a horrific sight. The campground was covered with corpses, which were shown to the people of Weimar as a deterrent.
