Jahrestag

January 31st 1943 - Surrender of the 6th Army at Stalingrad

January 31st 1943: A day after his appointment as General Field Marshal, the commander of the 6th German Army, Friedrich Paulus, surrenders at Stalingrad. With the surrender of the northern basin two days later, the event marks a turning point for the German warfare of the Second World War. Of the approximately 250,000 German soldiers around 150,000 were killed as a result of the Soviet encirclement. 90,000 were taken prisoner. The Nazi leadership was not to recover from the disaster. Further defeats were to follow, which eventually lead to the withdrawal of the Wehrmacht (or “German armed forces”) and its allies from the territory of the Soviet Union, and finally the liberation of the country.
