June 30th 1934 – The Night of the Long Knives

 

June 30th 1934: With a lightning strike Adolf Hitler eliminates the leadership of the SA and orders the liquidation of their leader Ernst Röhm, seen here. The event, known as the "Night of the Long Knives", served the Nazi leadership to eliminate rivals from within their own ranks. The operation was also a concession to the military and industry, whose support Hitler needed in order to carry out his war plans.
