April 22nd 1915 - First use of chlorine gas in World War I

 

April 22nd 1915: For the first time the German army uses chlorine gas as a deadly poisonous gas against its enemies near Ypres, Belgium. Its employment had a devastating effect. In total, the losses due to combat gases, such as mustard gas and phosgene gas during World War I, amounted to more than 80,000 soldiers, about ten times as many suffered serious long term injuries. The number of victims among the civilian population is not known.
