April 21st 1945 - Red Army reaches the city limits of Berlin

April 21st 1945: The first units of the Soviet army reach the city limits of Berlin and start the encirclement of the city. By the end of April, the Red Army succeeded to liberate district by district and to push forward into the government district. The capture of Berlin was the last major battle of World War II. It cost many lives, on the German side alone 100,000 soldiers are estimated to have been killed. The exact number could not be determined due to the missing and the dead bodies found later. The main victims of the conquest, however, were the people of Berlin themselves. Defenselessly caught in between the fronts they also perished in large numbers during the fighting. Hitlers order to pose resistance down to the last man sealed the dictator own fate. When the Red Army was only a few meters from his bunker he decided to pay homage to his own order and along with his companion Eva Braun committed suicide.
