February 18th 1943 – Goebbels “Total War” speech '

February 18th 1943: At the Berlin Sportplalast, a few days after the defeat at Stalingrad, Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels holds his infamous "Total War" speech. It is an attempt to mobilize the masses for a war which is becoming increasingly futile, a war which is raised to the status of a nationalistic myth by the leadership. While Goebbels speech triggers patriotic enthusiasm, the unnecessary dying continues on the eastern front. In the Soviet Union alone, the war will cost 25 million lives in addition to the victims of the genocide of European Jews and the devastating effects of the Allied bombing campaigns. Goebbels slogan "Now folk rise up and storm break lose” held true in a macabre way – in the end, the violence directed against others turns against the German population itself.
