October 16th 1944 - Invasion of Soviet troops into Eastern Prussia

October 16th 1944: An unprecedented exodus of the local German population begins in Eastern Prussia with the arrival of Soviet troops. The massacre of Nemmersdorf in particular leads the people to leave house and yard, while an evacuation measure adopted by the Nazi leadership, increased the panic even further. The larger refugee convoys could begin their march westward only by January 1945. However, soon the roads were blocked by the advancing Red Army. Those who dared to go on found themselves exposed to low-flying aircraft attacks or they died in the escape across the frozen Baltic Sea. No less dangerous was the escape by ship. The ocean liner Wilhelm Gustloff carrying a great number of refugees, gained tragic fame when it was sunk on January 30th 1945 by a Soviet submarine.
