November 15th 1923 - Introduction of the “Rentenmark”

November 15th 1923: By introducing the Rentenmark, or “Debt Security Mark”, the hyperinflation in Germany, ongoing since the end of World War I, finds its end. The release of this transitional currency was an artful last minute device. Since the new currency could not be secured by gold, due to the war and its aftereffects, the Weimar government burdened agriculture, trade and industry with billions in credit. With the introduction of the Reichsmark in August 1924 and the stabilization of the national budget by corresponding reductions on the part of the victorious powers, monetary transactions returned to normal.
