July 14th 1939 - Day of German Art` in Munich

July 14th 1939: Beginning of "Day of German art” in Munich. Adolf Hitler uses the two-day celebration, staged effectively and recorded in color, to promote himself, but also to segregate those artists who were in his eyes un-German and "degenerate." He wanted art that corresponded with his conception of the new people of National Socialism and let the very same be represented in the "House of German Art" opened in 1937. The "Day of German Art" was observed regularly from 1933 to 1939, supplemented by the "Great German Art Exhibition", which sought to convey the artistic taste of the Nazi leadership to the public each year until 1944.
