July 12th 1943 - Establishment of the National Committee “Free Germany”

July 12th 1943: Not far from Moscow, in Krasnogorsk, the National Committee for a Free Germany is established by German prisoners of war and Germans in exile. The organization, which came together at the initiative of the Soviet leadership, was devoted to propagate the truth and to enlighten German soldiers about Hitlers crimes. The writer Erich Weinert acted as president of the committee. Other prominent committee figures included the future president of the GDR Wilhelm Pieck and Walter Ulbricht. The establishment of the National Committee was followed after two months by the establishment of the Federation of German officers. Under its chairman the General of the Artillery Walther von Seydlitz it was united with the National Committee and followed a medial path between independence and conformity until its dissolution.
