January 12th 1904 - Start of the “Herero uprising” in German-Southwest Africa

 

January 12th 1904: In the imperial colony of German Southwest Africa, the so-called “Herero uprising” breaks out against the German colonial administration. Reason for the uprising was the mistreatment and the appropriation of the land of the tribal population by white settlers. The uprising was crushed by the German colonial forces at the Battle of Waterberg. A large part of the insurgents were pushed into the desert where they died of thirst. The Herero uprising is a dark chapter of German colonial history. The extinction of three quarters of the Herero population contributed to ending German colonial rule in Africa.
