March 7th 1945 - Capture of the bridge of Remagen by U.S. soldiers

It was a World War II myth: The Bridge of Remagen. Built during World War I to bring more troops and war materials to the Western Front, the 325-meter long railway bridge was also an important strategic point in the closing stages of World War II. On March 7th 1945, a small advancing unit of the 9th U.S. armored division managed to conquer the bridge. The capture of the bridge is known in war-history as the "Miracle of Remagen". The Germans had tried in vain to blow up the bridge. Even through bombing attacks and the use of undersea divers the German army command could not succeed in destroying the strategic crossing of the Rhine. The bridge managed to do that all by itself. 10 days after it was conquered it collapsed due to metal fatigue and carried pulling 28 soldiers to their death.
