April 6th 1917 - U.S. enter World War I

On April 6th 1917: The United States of America officially enter the first World War. At the start of the in 1914, the U.S. did declare itself neutral, but supported the triple Entente of Britain, France and Russia with military equipment and economic aid. To secure the international shipping lanes and overseas economic links of the neutral states, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson tried to insure compliance with the international rules for naval warfare. But to break the sea blockade imposed against the German Empire by the Allies, since February of 1916 German U-boats were attacking armed merchant ships of neutral states without prior warning. When the German Reich declared an unrestricted submarine war in February of 1917 and henceforth also attacked unarmed merchant ships of neutral countries, the U.S. factually saw themselves at war with Germany and handed in their formal declaration of war against the German Reich on April 6th 1917.
