March 18th 1961 - Franz-Josef Strauss

March 18th 1961: The Christian Social Union in Bavaria elects Franz-Josef Strauss as their President. At the federal level, Strauss, the defense minister of the government of Konrad Adenauer, is involved in several scandals, including in the "Spiegel Affair" in 1962, which triggers a serious government crisis. Strauss does not resign during the course of these scandals, but in the next Adenauer cabinet he is no longer represented as a minister. From 1966 to 1969 Strauss is the Minister of Finance of the grand coalition of the CDU/ CSU and the SPD. After the formation of the socialist-liberal coalition of SPD and FDP, Strauss becomes the sharpest opponent of the new policy of Willy Brandts towards the Iron Curtain. As a leading spokesman of the opposition and later from 1978 on as Bavarian prime minister Strauss present himself as a conservative hard-liner and polarized the nation with various populist right-wing slogans: Franz-Josef Strauss remains CSU leader until his death in 1988.
