April 9th 1945 - Bonhoeffer and Canaris die

April 9th 1945: Shortly before the arrival of the U.S. Troops the resistance fighters Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Wilhelm Canaris and others are hanged by SS men at the concentration camp Flossenbürg in the Oberpfalz, Germany. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, already a doctor of theology at age 21, following the events of 1933 quickly joins, the "Confessing Church" and the churchs resistance along with other critical pastors . This is how gets the attention of the Gestapo and is arrested in 1943 and held imprisoned without trial until April of 1945. By contrast Admiral Wilhelm Canaris first climbs the career ladder in Hitler 's Reich. In 1935 he becomes chief of German defense in the War Ministry after he had warmly welcomed the seizure of power by Nazis in 1933 as a declared opponent of the Weimar Republic and the Treaty of Versailles. But from 1938 on the right-wing hardliner who had helped to put down the November Revolution of 1918 and took part in the Kapp Putsch in 1920 began to change. Within the Wehrmacht he begins to organize the resistance against Hitler. Three days after the assassination attempt on Hitler failed in 1944 Canaris was arrested. On April 5th 1945 Adolf Hitler orders the execution of all not-yet-executed "conspirators" of the 20th of July. In textbook showtrials Bonhoeffer and Canaris are accused of participating in the failed attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler on the 20th of July 1944. Both are sentenced to death. To humiliate the defendants and to the amusement of the SS personnel those in the concentration camp of Flossenbürg who are meant for execution had to undress completely and walk naked to the gallows. The camp doctor watched the scene and later reported that Bonhoeffer had seemed perfectly calm and collected said goodbye to all the other prisoners and then said a short prayer. We emerge from the darkness now into a bright light. Why do we call it death? I do not know. (Dietrich Bonhoeffer)
