May 13th 1943 - Surrender in Africa

May 13th 1943: The Allied forces triumph in Tunis. The German Africa Corps surrender. Thus, the African campaign and the Second World War in North Africa come to an end. 120 000 German soldiers, and even more Italians, march into captivity. Only two days before the surrender, the German public learns of the replacement of the extremely popular Erwin Rommel due to failure, which had already had taken place in March 1943. His successful battles against the British, on the unusual African desert sand, made him popular. Now the Germans react in horror at the defeat and heavy losses in North Africa, which - just like the lost battle of Stalingrad- were interpreted as a deciding factor in the turning of the war.
