April 12th 1945 - Truman becomes U.S. president

April 12th 1945: U.S. President Franklyn D. Roosevelt dies and Harry S. Truman as Vice-President becomes the 33rd President of the United States. As co-signatory of the so-called “Potsdam Agreement” Truman is significantly responsible for the revision of the Allied postwar policy for the German Reich. Starting in 1947 the policy is influenced by the so-called “Truman Doctrine” on the side of the Western Allies. The Truman Doctrine is build on the expectation of growing tensions between the Soviet Union and the Western powers. Its goal is the containment of communist influence in the world. Truman pleaded personally for a speedy implementation of the Marshall Plan and promoted the completion of the North Atlantic Treaty. During his tenure Truman makes decisions which are equally disastrous as well as epoch-making: In August of 1945 he gave the order to drop the atomic bomb on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in June of 1948 he gave the U.S. Air Force the order to break the Soviet blockade of Berlin by an airlift. Re-elected in November of 1948 Truman decided in June of 1950 to support South Korea by force of arms against the invasion of North Korean troops. In accordance with his doctrine to stem the influence of communism Truman involves the U.S. forces in war with heavy losses.
