August 18th 1944 - Assassination of Thalmann

 

On August 18th, 1944 Ernst Thalmann is shot at the concentration camp Buchenwald. The body was immediately burned in the crematorium. The Nazis cover up the murder of her archenemy. They claim a little later, Thalmann died during the Allied bombing of the concentration camp on August 24th. His death makes him a martyr. After World War II, the blue-collar worker from Hamburg, who during the 1920s rose to be the Stalin faithful chairman of the Communist Party of Germany, is especially revered in East Germany, as the epitome of the communist resistance. In 1950 DEFA, the East German film studio, produces the Life of Thalmann, directed by Kurt Maetzig. In 1952, the children organization "Young Pioneers" is renamed "Pioneer-organization Ernst Thalmann".
