May 27th 1942 - Assassination of Heydrich

 

May 27th 1942 - Reinhard Heydrich is seriously wounded in Prague during an assassination attempt. The attempt is made on behalf of the Czech government in exile in London. The resistance movement will remove one of the most important men in the Nazi power structure. As head of the Main Office of Reich Security, Heydrich is largely responsible for terror and destruction in the occupied countries during World War II. After the invasion of Prague, Hitler makes Heydrich the Deputy Reich Protector in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. Quickly the Czechs begin to call him the butcher of Prague. Heydrich dies a few days after the attack. It remains the only successful assassination of a high-ranking Nazi official in Europe.
