March 2nd 1939 - Pope Pius XII

March 2nd 1939 - in Rome, the Cardinal State Secretary Eugenio Pacelli, is elected Pope under the name Pius XII. His person is not without controversy among historians. In particular, the completion of the Concordat with the Third Reich, which he mediated, is considered problematic because with it Pacelli not only sanctioned the Nazi dictatorship, but also helped Hitlers regime to become socially acceptable in the international arena. On the other hand he criticized the attacks on Jewish citizens and put in the now famous encyclical "With Burning Concern" co-authored by him the question of compatibility of national socialist ideas with Christian principles. Pius XII. died on October 9th 1958 in Italy's Castel Gandolfo.
