June 13th 1944 - First use of V1 over London

 

June 13th 1944: London. The German army launches the first V1 against the British capital. The rocket with the model number: “Fieseler 103” belonged to the so-called "wonder weapons" with which the Nazi leadership had hoped to still win the War. However, the effect of the explosive-filled, nearly 600 kmph fast cruise missile, remained limited. While in March of 1945 over 2000 rockets detonated in London, killing over 6,000 people, only a quarter of all the launched V1s reached their target. The majority were either shot down or lost due to technical failures. Hitler's aim to sustainably harm the British war economy was not achieved. The use of missiles only forged his enemies even closer together.
