July 15th 1937 - Construction of the Buchenwald concentration camp

July 15th 1937: On the Ettersberg (Ettershill) in Weimar, the SS begins with the construction of the concentration camp Buchenwald. Initially, mainly people deemed by the Nazis to be domestic enemies, racially and socially undesirable groups such as Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, convicts and members of religious minorities are imprisoned here. After the outbreak of World War II prisoners were added from across Europe. They were exploited for the most part as forced laborers in the German armaments industry. Buchenwald was the largest concentration camp on German soil. An estimated one quarter of a million people lived in the 136 main and external camps, over 50,000 of whom fell victim to medical experiments, torture, assassinations, diseases and malnutrition.
