August 16th 1809 - Founding of the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Berlin

 

August 16th 1809: The Friedrich-Wilhelms-University is founded in Berlin. The university, seen here on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, became one of the most prestigious universities in Germany. Amongst its most important members are the historian Theodor Mommsen, the Nobel laureate Albert Einstein and physician Robert Koch. The womans rights activist Alice Salomon studied here as did poet Heinrich Heine the politician Otto von Bismarck and the author of “Das Kapital” Karl Marx. In 1946 the university was renamed after its initiator Wilhelm von Humboldt and it still bears his name today.
