March 16th 1935 - Re-introduction of conscription in Nazi Germany

 

March 16th 1935: Adolf Hitler announces the reintroduction of conscription in the German Reich. This act, which, such as the operation of the German Luftwaffe, violated the provisions of Treaty of Versailles, triggered heavy protests by the Western powers. The Nazi government was unimpressed, and pointed to the supposed dangers a strengthened Soviet Union posed. They succeeded. In August 1936, the compulsory military service initially set for 1 year was extended to 2, and the goal was set to increase the so-called “peacetime army” to 36 divisions with 580,000 men by 1939.
