September 17th 1916 - Manfred von Richthofen wins first air combat

 

September 17th 1916: Manfred von Richthofen, famously known as the Red Baron, wins his first aerial combat over Cambrai, France. Thus began the then 24-year-olds career as a fighter pilot that until his death earned him 80 air victories his own fighter squadron and according battle honors. Richthofen was also esteemed by his opponents for his tactical skills. Being taught in school by the known fighter pilot Oswald Boelcke he commanded the skill of air combat unlike any other German pilot and was awarded the Order Pour Le Merite. But his days were numbered after having being wounded in the summer of 1917. In April the following year while engaged in a battle with pilots of the Royal Air Force he was mortally wounded and crashed.
