April 21st 1918 - Manfred von Richthofen dies

April 21st 1918: Manfred von Richthofen, historically known as the "Red Baron" and flying ace of World War I, is shot down during an air battle northwest of Vaux-sur-Somme, France. The young officer, already glorified as a heroic figure in his own lifetime, and seen here in front of his fighter plane, joined the Air Force in 1915 as a volunteer, where he quickly made a career for himself. At the turn of 1916/17, he had already surpassed all other German pilots with the amount of victories and was awarded the Medal of Pour le Mérite. In 1917, he was also received by the Emperor Wilhelm II. After his 80th kill in early 1918 the tide began to turn. While in pursuit of an enemy aircraft, Richthofen was mortally wounded. The Allies buried his body with military honors.
