September 21st 1933 - Establishment of the Emergency order of Pastors

September 21st 1933: As a result of the so-called Aryan clause, with which the National Socialists wanted to also disbar church officials of Jewish origin, the Emergency order of Pastors is formed in Berlin. The most prominent representative was the pastor of Dahlem and former U-boat commander Martin Niemöller. Niemöller, although initially himself impressed by Hitler, saw the exclusion of his Jewish counterparts, not only an act of Anti-Semitic violence, but also an attack on the independence of the Protestant Church. In a protest letter to the church government, he and his colleagues appealed to adhere to the principles of the Christian faith and to advocate an abolition of the Aryan Clause.
