March 24th 1944 -The Ardeatine Massacre

March 24th 1944: After an attack on members of a South Tyrolean police regiment in Rome, on the order of the local SS and Police Commissioner Herbert Kappler 335 Italian civilians are shot in the nearby caves of Ardeatine,. The massacre, portrayed by the perpetrators as a measure of atonement, was, after 1945, the subject of numerous legal investigations. According to the investigations, the victims were selected from prison populations, brought to the scene in shackles and shot in the neck by men of the SS. Only a few of those responsible could be prosecuted after the war. The imposed death sentences were commuted to prison terms. Kappler himself was able to escape to Germany in 1977.
