April 30th 1945 - Liberation of Munich by U.S. troops


April 30th 1945: The day after the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp, U.S. troops advance into the Bavarian capital of Munich. For the inhabitants the invasion meant the end of the Nazi dictatorship and the end of the allied bombings, which had destroyed half the city and had cost thousands of lives until the end of the war. Munich had particular meaning for the Nazis. It was Hitlers "capital of the movement" where he had lived as a young man and had attempted a coup in 1923. In 1938 under in his order the Munich conference with which he forced Czechoslovakia to concede the territories of the Sudetenland to the German Reich took place here While the Americans occupied the city he committed suicide with Eva Braun in his Berlin bunker.
