June 1st 1958 - Charles De Gaulle becomes Prime Minister of France

After his resignation as prime minister in 1946 and the collapse of his campaign against the constitution of the 4th Republic, Charles de Gaulle withdraws back to Colombey at the beginning of the 1950s, and writes his memoirs. In 1958, France is on the brink of civil war. The wars and crises, for example the Indochina War, the Suez crisis of the Algerian conflict, which the dying colonial power ventured into blindly and arrogantly after World War II, cause disorder in the country. In Algiers, General Massu rises to the presidency. In Paris there is panic, the parliamentary Fourth Republic is dying. Subsequently, on June 1st 1958 Charles de Gaulle becomes French Prime Minister again. He presents himself as a "savior of the nation," puts down the revolt in Algiers and begins a determined move to pull all power towards him, through a constitutional reform which is tailored to his presidency.
