Jahrestag

November 6th 1956 - Dwight D. Eisenhower wins U.S. Presidency

In 1956, after having recovered from a heart attack, Dwight D. Eisenhower once more participates in a presidential election campaign. On November 6th 1956 "Ike" - as he is known to party members – is confirmed for a second term as U.S. president. The events of the Suez crisis, the conflict in Lebanon and the successful revolution in Cuba under the leadership of Fidel Castro, fall in the period of his renewed presidential term. Eisenhower continues the doctrine of his predecessor, Truman, of containing the Communist influence in the world, but focuses on the tools of economic and military aid, avoiding military conflict with the Soviet Union. John F. Kennedy follows Dwight D. Eisenhower as the 35th President of the United States in 1961.
