January 9th 1960 - Aswan Dam

January 9th 1960: The construction of the Aswan Dam begins. The opening of the dam is to enable the development of new areas in the Nile Valley. With this, the Egyptian President Abdel Nasser Gama reacts to the demographic development of his country. The sudden increase in population threatens to increase poverty and hunger. Construction was to begin as early as 1956, but the U.S. and the World Bank withdrew their financial commitment. Nasser had bought weapons in the Soviet Union. To still realize his monumental work of construction, the Egyptian president nationalizes the Suez Canal. The thereby triggered Suez crisis, will be settled by the super powers of the U.S. and the USSR. Nassers military defeat leads to a political victory. From the revenue of the canal company he now finances the majority of the dam building. By supplying money and engineers the Soviet Union helps in building the Aswan Dam. With this Khrushchev secures a strategically important friendship with Nasser and Egypt for the Soviet Union for years to come. After 11 years of construction the Aswan Dam is opened. Nasser however did not get to witness the realization of his idea. He died three months before the completion of the gigantic dam.
