September 11th 1971 - Nikita Khrushchev dies

Nikita Khrushchev dies on September 11th 1971. For a decade, Khrushchev, due to his spectacularly dangerous tendencies in crisis management, had accelerated the political contest between the systems of socialism and capitalism. Suez Crisis, Cuban missile crisis, Berlin crisis - Khrushchevs foreign policy held the world in suspense and led it to the brink of nuclear war. The party leader's power was always based on the military trying to globally increase the political influence of the Soviet Union by military threats. Domestically Khrushchev played the paternal role but his economic policy was without success. Due to this and due to the growing tensions with the emerging superpower China Khrushchev finally fell in 1964 and was replaced by Leonid Brezhnev who also was a military man and former protégé of Khrushchev.
