September 14th 1958 - First meeting of Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer

 

At the beginning of the 1950s Charles de Gaulle still had rejected the integration of the Federal Republic of Germany into the group of Western European states. He spoke out against Germanys joining of NATO rejected the Schuman Plan which intended the association of Germany among other countries with the Coal and Steel Community (or “Montanunion”) and eventually all plans for a European Economic Community which included the Federal Republic of Germany. But in 1958 just elected prime minister again de Gaulle seeks the reconciliation with Germany and meets with German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer on September 14th 1958 at his country home in Colombey-deux-Eglises. The two leaders like each other well and from the friendship of Adenauer and De Gaulle the political-power axis between Paris and Bonn later Berlin emerges which has remained essential for the European Union to this day.
