April 28th 1969 - President Charles de Gaulle resigns

During the night of April 28th 1969 the French President Charles de Gaulle resigns. The student protests and general strike of 1968 stirred up French society and unleashed a wave of modernization, which De Gaulle did not want to follow, or could not. In the last months of his reign, he ruled detached from the public, sometimes even arrogantly. Some even said he had lofty style of leadership. To push back the influence of the Communist Party, which was gaining strength, as well as the new social movements, De Gaulle once again uses all his authority to dip the balances of power. He equates the referendum on regional reform with a referendum on his presidency. When the referendum fails with only 47.5% of the vote, Charles de Gaulle resigns the same night.
