March 31st 1939 - British-French form the Anglo-Polish military alliance in support of Poland

On March 31st 1939 the Anglo-Polish military alliance comes into force. It provides that France and Britain would create an offensive on western Germany no later than 15 days after a German attack on Poland. On the basis of this alliance, the two countries gave the German Reich, which had just attacked Poland the day before, an ultimatum on the 2nd of September 1939. The ultimatum demanded the immediate withdrawal of all German troops from Poland. Hitler hoped that the two Western powers would let him carry on with the occupation of Poland as well as with the invasion of the "remaining part of Czechoslovakia". In fact, the West does not attack for now. However, England and France declare war on Germany on September 3rd, after the ultimatum had expired.
