May 4th 1980 - Tito dies

On May 4th 1980 Josip Broz Tito dies. During the 2nd World War, Tito gains a reputation as a legendary partisan leader. From 1942 on his units provided permanent resistance, and kept strong military forces of the Germans and Italians tied up in Yugoslavia. After the liberation of Belgrade and the proclamation of the Republic Tito first becomes Prime Minister, then President in 1953. First a partisan of Stalin, in 1948 he begins to asserts his own, third ideology, which ventures between a planned economy and a market economy for Yugoslavia. This approach is closely tied to the concept of workers self-management. Tito also follows his own paths in foreign policy which lead between the solidified power blocs of the Cold War. During numerous trips he advertises his idea of “non-alignment” in developing countries even before Nikita Khrushchev had declared the concept of "peaceful coexistence". In 1968 he supports Czech leader of the Communist Party Alexander Dubcek. Tito decisively rejects the crushing of the “Prague Spring” by Warsaw Pact troops.
